Nukakamma meaning “grassy water”, is the Khoisan name for Sundays River because of its verdant grassy banks. Nukakamma Canoe Trail is a much sought after two day flat-water trail along the Sundays River, which is situated some 40kms from Port Elizabeth (a mere half hour’s drive). The Nukakamma Canoe Trail is the only Green Flag Status Canoe Trail in South Africa.
The journey begins aboard our 4 metre double canoes with a 13km trip along the Sundays River from our premises to your overnight accommodation and a 13km canoe trip back the following day. We can accommodate a maximum of 21 people on a trail and the trails can be extended to 2 nights at a discounted rate. For safety reasons we do not allow less than 6 people on the trail at any one time.
Arrive at our A Taste of Africa Restaurant to sign in and our guide will direct you to our premises. Once there you will off load your luggage into our trailer and we will help set you up on the canoes.
While you are canoeing to the cabin we will take all your luggage and our provided bedding to the cabin and all will be ready for your arrival.
The river is on average about 2m deep at high tide except at the mouth where it is much shallower. Depending on weather conditions, the journey can take anything from 3 to 5 hours, according to the tide and the wind.
The accommodation is an overnight two cabins with two or three-tiered wooden bunk-beds, fitted with foam rubber mattresses. It also has a covered barbecue area and is equipped with two picnic tables and some braai utensils.
Experience the thrill and excitement of the area with the bird life ranging to approximately 210 recorded species and watching out for Mullet fish actively jumping into or over the canoes. Keep your eyes peeled for Kudu, Bushbuck, Porcupine, Cape Otter, Vervet Monkeys and other wildlife in the bush across the river. Finally, finish your day off by enjoying a barbeque with the view of a spectacular sunset.

Lol thank you for a awesome experience, now the 3rd time doing the trail and it never fails ? to provide a good time. The added land marks also improved on the experience. Only thing I could ask for was maybe a chart for the water pump, we figured out ok if we open the basin tap then the pump kicks in so can shower, also we could not use the rain water tank ,you would open the tap but nothing, so if there was a chart explaining that it would be awesome, but It was and has always been a fun time. - Shafeeq
I enjoyed it tremendously. The guys were very helpful and friendly.. Equipment in good condition set-up is lovely. Only issue was that the drinking water tap had no water in it. The 7sleeper back room couldn't lock from inside as the lock and hole did not correspond. The hole was too high. Needs to be moved lower . Other than that , had a fantastic time - Ruwayda
We had a lovely paddle up the river, lots of birdlife and were lucky with the wind and the tide. I very enjoyable trip. - Michelle
One small wrinkle was the hole in the bottom of our canoe. But that was corrected soon after discovery.... All around our party of 10 were extremely happy with the adventure, facilities and service. Thank you.. - Tracy
We were very happy with the overall experience. Thank you - Susan
